In this episode my guest is Duygu Yuruk, who is one of the most successful people I know. She became the Sales Manager of a famous cosmetics brand when she was 27, then rose up to the role of Sales Director of the cosmetics brand MAC for Turkey and due to her success she was invited to be the Sales Director of MAC for Germany. Now she continues her career as the Head of Sales for another big brand of fragrances and home products for Germany and Switzerland.

Why should you listen to this episode

How is it to graduate from the university and have a vision of yourself? How can one be so driven to take responsibility and continue to grow and help others grow? What does one do when there is a slight feeling of things are not going so well? How is it to work in a completely different culture? If these questions intrigue you, this episode is for you.

The Key messages I took away

Duygu can trace back the love of selling back to her childhood, it was something that she found fun back then, which she still does. Enjoying what you do is a big driver of success. She credited also her being bold and having a growth and contribution mindset as one of the key components of where she is right now.

She never had a dull moment at work. She always looked for different ways of doing things. So being stuck was also never an option for her. She always moved to a direction, tested things, talked with people, created new opportunities and results.

She was driven, bold, hard working and she had also a manager that trusted her. This was one big supportive factor of her being promoted to the sales manager position so young. This is a repetitive pattern that I heard in most of my conversations. There is always a mentor that played a key role in my guests’ lives, like the ones in Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey.

Duygu told me that one of the most important things for her is to be remembered as someone who made a difference in people’s lives and in her leadership this is her main motivator, to challenge her team, support their growth and create a fun and harmonious atmosphere for everyone.

We also talked about the differences of working in Turkey and in Germany. She learned from both cultures and enriched her working style with these learnings.
